Mixed Media Class Inspired Card with Watercolor

SN_Eat-Sleep-Create_FB-Cover I am absolutely blown away by the Eat, Sleep, Create class that is going on over at StampNation!  I’ve never really done art journaling before, so I’ve planned to take the class (from some pretty amazing instructors, I might add!) and incorporate those techniques into my card making (which I encourage you to do as well!)

But Josefine (our first instructor) has got me all sorts of excited and inspired and I think I may take a stab at it!

The biggest reason I think is because art journaling would be for ME.  When we make cards, we are always thinking about what the recipient would like…right?  And isn’t that how we live most of our lives?  Taking care of the ones we love?  That’s all sorts of wonderful…but sometimes we need to take care of ourselves.

I know we do by being artistic and making cards and enjoying the process…but an art journal would be only for you!  I’ve never thought about it that way before and I’m really intrigued by the thought.  Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think!

Mixed Media Class Inspired Card with Watercolor3 This card was inspired by a background technique that Josefine shared in her first video for the class.  She used sprays (which was AWESOME!) and I improvised with supplies I had on hand.  View the video tutorial to see how this card came together!

I used ink refills for this card because I wanted a dark, saturated color on the background.   I could have achieved a similar look by smooshing my ink pads on my craft mat and picking up the color with a paint brush, but the overall look would have been lighter.

Mixed Media Class Inspired Card with Watercolor2 CHOOSING COLORS:  Josefine did a great job in her classroom tutorial on how to choose colors based on the color wheel.  If your colors are going to mix together, be sure to use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, or in the rainbow. Lime Rickey (green) and All That Jazz (blue) are next each other, so when they mixed together they created another color.

I didn’t have to worry about All That Jazz and Flirty Fuchsia (purple) mixing together, either…but Lime Rickey and Flirty Fuchsia had to be controlled.  The Lime Rickey areas were on their way to being dry when I added Flirty Fuchsia, but a paper towel on hand helped control the colors from mixing too much and turning to mud.

Mixed Media Class Inspired Card with Watercolor The Stained Glass Coverplate is back in stock!  Though, I’m guessing after this post it may go out of stock again…we do have more on the way.  We are thrilled that you all love this coverplate as much as we do!

Thanks for visiting with me today, I hope your day is awesome!

I have been watching the class on SN and do not have a journal yet. I like how you used what we learned and made a card front. I think I might also go that way too. Your card turned out beautiful and I love how you put the Coverplate over it!

It never ceases to amaze me when someone points out to me what should have been obvious. Creating in an art journal is indeed so personal and all for me! I so enjoyed the first week’s class and soon I’ll have time to do this week’s. (Taxes…boo). There is real joy in pulling out art supplies and just playing with colors and designs without it being for something specific for someone.

Thanks for pointing out that we card makers do get to enjoy the art of creating for our own pleasure.

Fun! I had been thinking of trying to use my CP reinkers for this technique, and now I now it will definitely work. I’m also thinking I will try spraying the ink with water and perfect pearls…
